Super Unlucky Day in a Year-Friday 13th

Friday 13th is the most unlucky day in a year. It occurs minimum once a year or maximum three times a year. This year 2011 have only one unlucky day.

The reason why Friday 13th became a super unlucky day is because the number 13 and the day Friday will bring bad luck since long time ago. The two unlucky days combined together make a super unlucky day.

Loki asked Hoder to kill Blader
According to a folklore historian Dossey found that the number 13th can be found in a Norse myth. In this story, 12 gods were having a dinner at Valhalla which is a heaven. However, they didn’t invite 13th guest who is god Loki. Loki got angry, and he asked Hoder, the god of darkness, to kill Balder, the god of joy and gladness. When Balder died, the whole Earth got dark. The day became a bad day.

More logically, according to what Thomas Fernsler (a scientist in the Mathematics and Science Education Resource Center) said number 13 is not a complete number. This is because previous number 12 is a “complete” number. There are 12 months in a year, 12 signs of the zodiac, 12 gods of Olympus, 12 tribes of Israel, and 12 apostles of Jesus. Number 13th is just bit beyond completeness. Therefore, the day 13th became an unlucky day.

Friday became a bad day because it’s the day Jesus was crucified. Moreover, some biblical scholars believe that Eve tempted Adam with the forbidden fruit on Friday. Also in ancient Rome, witches gathered in groups of 12, and the 13th was the evil.

Friday the 13th, a superstition belief has great impact on our life. A report shows that around $800 or $900 million is lost in business on this day, because people will not do things as they normally did. Many people will feel anxiety to panic on this day.

This superstition not only affects people, but also societies. A research found that more than 80% of high-rise buildings lack a 13th floor. Many airports skip the 13th gate. Hospitals and hotels regularly have no number 13. In Florence, Italy, the house between number 12 and 14 is 12 1/2.

No one really knows why Friday the 13th became so bad. It is just a normal day, spend the day as usual. Who knows it might be your super lucky day!

Rose Totino & Frozen pizza

Rose Totino

Do you know who is Rose Totino? She was the first person who came up with the idea of frozen pizza. I guess many Korean don’t know who she was, because Korean loves to eat food that is just cooked and still hot. Here I am going to tell you how awesome she was!

She was born in 1915 at Minnesota. She was the fourth out of seven children. Her parents were both Italian immigrant. When Rose Totino was 16, she dropped out of school in order to support her family’s income. She was like many other Italian-Americans she was raised with the Italian culture that family centered. The other event that had affected Rose Totino was Great Depression. A lot of young women dropped out of school to work during this period, while young men stayed to learn.

Jim and Rose (Rose's husband left)
Rose met her husband Jim Totino at the Viking Dance Hall near where she lived, and they got married. Lather, Rose and her husband opened a Totino’s Italian Kitchen. During that time, it was rare to have a pizza takeout restaurant in the area. Since the pizza was relatively new, Rose had to bring samples of pizza to a bank loan officer, so she could get support from financing. The restaurant opened on February 7, 1951. Their pizzas were so popular that they sold 500 pizzas every day. Totino’s Pizza became the top selling pizza in supermarkets across the U.S.

Frozen Pizza

After then years after they stared the business, Rose came up with the idea to sell frozen pizzas to customers, so people can bake their pizza at home. This is because, lots of women were busy at working, and they didn’t have time to make proper meal for themselves. At 1970, the Totino frozen pizza was the number one frozen pizza in the United States.

She became one of the top female executives in the world of business. Totino gave millions to charity and to schools. She also helped finance several civic projects. In addiction, she gave money to her mother’s hometown for church repairs and to help build a new school. Her husband died in 1981. Rose died from cancer in 1994. She was 79.

Rose Totino was described as a warm, kind, and generous human being. Her life gives us strength of what people can do with talent and a bit of hard work.
